What To Do If Someone Is Missing

Act fast — the first 24 hours matter most. You do NOT have to wait 24 hours to report a missing person. That is a myth. The police are legally required to register your complaint immediately.

1. File an FIR (First Information Report)
एफआईआर (प्रथम सूचना रिपोर्ट) दर्ज करें
Go to the nearest police station immediately. A missing person complaint can be filed at any police station.
तुरंत नज़दीकी पुलिस स्टेशन जाएँ। लापता व्यक्ति की शिकायत किसी भी थाने में दर्ज की जा सकती है।
Carry a recent photograph, ID proof of the missing person (if available), and details: height, build, clothes last worn, distinguishing marks (tattoos, scars), and where/when last seen.
एक हाल की फ़ोटो, पहचान पत्र (अगर हो), और विवरण लाएँ: कद, शरीर, आख़िरी बार पहने कपड़े, पहचान के निशान (टैटू, निशान), और कहाँ/कब आख़िरी बार देखा गया।
Insist the police register the FIR and give you a copy with the FIR number. This copy is your legal record — keep it safe.
ज़ोर दें कि पुलिस एफआईआर दर्ज करे और आपको एफआईआर नंबर के साथ एक कॉपी दे। यह कॉपी आपका कानूनी रिकॉर्ड है — इसे संभालकर रखें।
Tip: For a missing child or woman, the police MUST register the FIR and begin investigation right away (Supreme Court directive).
सुझाव: बच्चे या महिला के लापता होने पर पुलिस को तुरंत एफआईआर दर्ज करनी ही होगी (सुप्रीम कोर्ट का निर्देश)।
2. If Police Refuse — Use Zero FIR
अगर पुलिस मना करे — ज़ीरो एफआईआर का इस्तेमाल करें
If a police station says "this is not our area" and refuses, you have the right to file a Zero FIR — any police station must register it regardless of jurisdiction, then transfer it to the correct station.
अगर थाना कहे "यह हमारा क्षेत्र नहीं है" और मना करे, तो आपको ज़ीरो एफआईआर दर्ज कराने का अधिकार है — कोई भी थाना इसे दर्ज करने के लिए बाध्य है, चाहे क्षेत्र कोई भी हो। बाद में वह सही थाने को भेज देगा।

4. If Police Don't Act
अगर पुलिस कार्रवाई न करे
Escalate in writing to the Superintendent of Police (SP) or Deputy Commissioner (DCP) of your district. Keep a copy of your letter.

File an online complaint on your State Police website, or the national portal at digitalpolice.gov.in.

File an RTI (Right to Information) to ask about the status of the investigation — this often pushes the case forward.

As a last resort, file a Habeas Corpus petition in the High Court, which directs the police to produce the missing person.

5. Other Important Steps

Check nearby hospitals, shelters, and railway/bus stations. Share recent photos with staff.
